PANLEUKOPENIA HALTS INTAKE OF FELINES AT COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER

LEE COUNTY, NC – November 6, 2023 – The Lee County Government (LCG) Health Department has reported two confirmed cases of feline panleukopenia at the Lee County animal shelter, which has caused Animal Services to suspend intake of any new felines at the shelter until November 16th, 2023.

Feline panleukopenia is a highly contagious gastrointestinal disease affecting cats that proves fatal in most cases. After consulting with the County veterinarian on how best to combat the disease, LCG Animal Services has begun implementing the necessary protocols and procedures of disinfecting the facility.

Rescue groups and individuals who have adopted felines from the shelter in the past two weeks have been contacted and notified of the feline’s possible exposure to the disease. Shelter staff are available to help answer any questions and provide information to anyone who has recently adopted a feline from LCG Animal Services.

During this time, the shelter will continue to accept and adopt canines from the facility, as there are no known risks to canines. There is also no risk to humans from the disease.

For more information, please contact LCG Animal Services at 919-776-7446.
