Lee County Tax Bills get an Upgrade

When County residents receive their annual tax bills this July, they will notice a significant change. Lee County has changed the format for property tax bills from a postcard to a letter size bill. The new format will allow the tax department to mail property tax notices in an envelope and provide a return envelope for the customer to remit payment to the tax office. Notices will provide billing and collection information that will answer frequently asked questions. Of course, the customer may contact the office if they need assistance by calling the Collections office at 919-718-4662 or the Billing office at 919-718-4661 or by visiting our office at 106 Hillcrest Drive.

New bills are also being developed for Registered Motor Vehicles as well. The format will be similar to regular property tax bills and the target date for this change is September, 2006.

In addition to the new bill format, tax bills are also available on-line through the county’s new website at www.leecountync.gov. The customer can access this information from the Home Page by clicking on Pay Your Taxes On-line or from the Tax Department’s page by clicking on On-line Tax Payments. Customers may look up Real Estate, Personal Property and Registered Motor Vehicle bills by using the criteria requested. They may also access their payment history. If they need to know the amount they paid for income tax purposes for example, they can look it up on- line.

For customers that have their property taxes escrowed and paid by their lender, they will receive a tax bill in addition to the information being furnished to the lender. It is important to know that it is the taxpayer’s responsibility to ensure that their mortgage lender has submitted payment to the tax office.

The tax office will continue to provide assistance to customers in their office as needed. The new bill format and on-line access is an enhancement to the department’s customer service.
