Day CareCHILD CARE SUBSIDY PROGRAMSubsidized child care was established to assist parents with the cost of child care. It is a program funded with both State and Federal dollars.
In order to qualify for financial assistance for child care, the parents or responsible adults must meet the program’s income guidelines and must have a recognized need for child care. They must also be a resident of the county in which they apply. The child care subsidy program can assist parents with the cost of child care for children ages 0-12.

There are currently more than 100-licensed child care centers and homes in Lee County that participate in the child care subsidy program.Child care facilities in North Carolina are rated with a Five Star Rated License system based on how well they are doing in providing quality child care. Parents can obtain a child care provider’s star rating by checking the listing of providers on the Division of Child Development’s website http://www.ncchildcare.net or by looking at the license which is prominently displayed at the center or home. Parents and responsible adults are allowed to choose the child care provider that best meets the needs of the child.
Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Appointment procedure: You may either make an appointment or come to the agency as a walk-in to apply for child care subsidy services. When subsidy funding is limited, Lee County Child Care Services maintains a waiting list for parents or responsible adults requesting financial assistance for child care.Parents who are interested in being placed on the waiting list must fill out a waiting list form. This form will include income eligibility information, need for child care, work/school information, etc. The waiting list form can be printed from the link on the next page.
What to bring with you: To expedite disposition of your application and to determine the parent fee you are responsible to pay, bring check stubs from the last three pay periods to verify income, school registration if you are a student and verification of Veteran’s benefits. Checks to providers: Checks are issued on the 15th of each month to over 100 child care providers. If you do not receive your check within 10 county business days, please call Brenda Walker at (919)718-4690 Ext. 5206.
Attendance Sheets: Attendance sheets are given out to new providers at the time of enrollment. Additional attendance sheets are mailed out to current child care providers monthly with the turnaround sheets. Additional sheets may also be printed from the link at the bottom of this page. Attendance sheets must be received at Lee County DSS by the first working day of the following month by 5:00. Signed copies of the attendance forms may be dropped off at 530 Carthage St., mailed to PO Box 1066, Sanford, NC 27331, or faxed to Lee County DSS at (919)718-4634.
