Q: How Do I Register to Vote?

A: To register to vote in Lee County click on “Register to Vote”, download the registration form, complete the form and mail it to

You may register to vote in Lee County if you are:
A citizen of the United States
A person 18 years of age or older
A person 17 years of age who will be 18 by the date of the general election

Q: How Do I Check voter registration?

Q: How do I Find my Polling place?

A: To find your polling place go to the NC State Board of Elections website (here) and click on “Check Your Voter Registration” on the left side of the screen.  Enter your personal data and submit to display you name and address.  Click on your name and you will see a screen that tells your voter information.  On this screen is your polling place.  Follow instructions to view your polling place, to get a map to your polling place and to get driving instruction to your polling place.

Q: How do I Report a roadsign that is down?

A: To report a missing road name sign in an unincorporated area of Lee County contact Marc Clark at 919-718-4622 ext. 5382.  Please contact NCDOT at 919-775-3122 for all other missing signs including stop signs or speed limit signs.  Residents of the City of Sanford or the Town of Broadway should call their local municipality.


Q: How do I obtain veteran DD-214 information?

A: If you have lost your DD-214 and do not have one on file at the Register of Deeds office, you may go online to the National Archives Veterans section to request a copy.

Complete all required fields
Print, sign and fax or mail the signature authorization page to the records center. The fax number and address are on the web site. Allow 2 to 3 weeks for the request to be completed.

If you do not have computer access, visit the Lee County Veterans Service Office at the Enrichment Center located at 1615 South Third Street in Sanford and the online request can be completed for you. Be sure you have the veteran’s name, SSN, DOB, place of birth; branch of service, month and year the veteran was discharged.


Q: How do I renew/obtain a passport?

A: To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of  7,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States with two photographs of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver’s license.

Acceptance facilities include many Federal, state and probate courts, post offices, some public libraries and a number of county and municipal offices. There are also 13 regional passport agencies, and 1 Gateway City Agency, which serve customers who are traveling within 2 weeks (14 days), or who need foreign visas for travel. Appointments are required in such cases.

You’ll need to apply in person if you are applying for a U.S. passport for the first time:  if your expired U.S. passport is not in your possession; if your previous U.S. passport has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago; if your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were under age 16; or if your currently valid U.S. passport has been lost or stolen.

You can renew by mail if: Your most recent passport is available to submit and it is not damaged; you received the passport within the past 15 years; you were over age 16 when it was issued; you still have the same name, or can legally document your name change.

If your passport has been, altered or damaged, you cannot apply by mail. You must apply in person.

Q: How do I obtain books from other libraries?

A: Have you ever wanted to read a book that the local library did not own? Interlibrary loan is a program where libraries can borrow books from other libraries for patrons. For example, this is a great way to read books by your favorite author that our library does not have. Materials not available via interlibrary loan are new books published within the past year, audio books, videos, and reference books.

There is a charge of $2.00 per book for this service. Information needed to place an order is the title and author of the book, along with the patron’s name and contact telephone number and/or email address. Q: How do I find public internet acess?

A: There is free public internet access at the main Library in Sanford. There is a public lab that is wired for internet access and the main Library also has free WiFi connections. The public can use these facilities as long as they have a valid Library card. There is also public WiFi access at the Enrichment Center located at 1615 South Third Street in Sanford.

Q: How do I apply for a Handgun permit?

A: Applications for handgun permits are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the front desk of the Sheriff's office or click on the link at the end of this answer to download a copy of the application. Follow the instructions on the application and return it to the Sheriff's office. It usually take 24 hours to process the application during normal business hours Monday thru Friday. You may call the Sheriff's office at (919)-718-4561 to check and see if the application has been approved. If approved, the permits are $5.00 each -CASH ONLY. You can get as many as 3 permits from one application. You need one handgun permit to purchase one handgun.

Q: How do I see traffice counts?

A: To find the traffic counts for Lee County follow these steps. 

  1. First, go to the Lee County Government main web site.
  2. On the right hand side of the page, click on Interactive Mapping.
  3. Then click on active GIS mapping.
  4. Click on Interactive Mapping.
  5. Once the map comes up go to the right hand side of the page and click on the folder All Other Layers.
  6. The button that says Traffic Counts defaults to off, click on that to turn it on.
  7. Then click on the blue arrows at the top of that tab to reload the map.
  8. At this time, there should be red squares that appear on the map.
  9. On the upper left hand side of the page, you will see some icons that look like a printer, magnifying glass etc, click on the light blue circle with an i in the middle of it.
  10. Now move your mouse over one of the red squares and single click.
  11. Back on the right hand side of the window an information tab appears.
  12. If there are traffic counts for that square there will be a Traffic Counts section, click on more info. NOTE: Not all red squares contain traffic counts.
  13. This will show you the counts for the years from 1999 to 2004.
  14. To see the traffic counts for the city of Sanford, click on the layers tab on the right hand side of the window.
  15. Then click on the Jurisdiction folder and turn off Sanford City Limits.
  16. Click the blue arrows at the top of this tab to reload the map. This will put red squares in the city and you can click on them as described above to get more information.
