Pistol Purchase Permit Notice

Effective March 29, 2023

Any person who wishes to buy a pistol will not be required to apply for a pistol purchase permit through the Sheriff's Office.

The North Carolina General Assembly eliminated the requirement for permits to purchase handguns. The local firearms retailer is now required to complete the inquiry through National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and complete the ATF Form 4473.
The law does not affect the requirement for a concealed carry permit.

The Sheriff's Office will not issue any pistol purchase permits but will continue to offer the services that it has previously provided with regard to concealed carry permits.
